Terminator Salvation Review (Possible Spoilers!!)

Fri May 22, 2009, 6:38 PM
Well, I just got back from seeing the new Terminator movie. To begin with, I wasn't expecting much. This, along with its predecessor, had a lot to live up to. Terminator 2 is not only one of the best action flicks of all time, but it really set the bar for how special effects were produced and put in film. But you don't want to hear about T2, you wanna hear about the new movie.

First thing's first. Christian Bale is an awful John Connor. Face it, Christian Bale is not that great of an actor. Sure, his role in the new Batman movies is considered by most to be noteworthy, but he remains very unbelievable as Bruce Wayne and a "trying-too-hard-to-be-menacing" Dark Knight. Anyway, Christian Bale really takes a liking to saying "This is John Connor" (sound familiar?). In his exciting points he comes off as a very dull and uninteresting character. He almost uses his signature Batman growl in a few scenes, but it's pretty down-played.

The movie takes place in California in 2018, and focuses around John Connor trying to save his future father, Kyle Reese, from being terminated. The movie also follows the plot of a man named Marcus Wright, who sold his body to science after being put to death in 2003, and because of that, is a humanoid robot. The movie also includes a whole large list of new characters which assist as fellow soldiers and leaders in the resistance. Most of the acting is mediocre. The one real breakthrough performance was done by Anton Yelchin, who played the teenaged Kyle Reese (he also played Chekov in Star Trek, released just the other week). He really stands out above the rest, mostly because he's the only one who really puts a good amount of effort into his role.

The action scenes were, well, incredible to say the least. The effects were top notch and used well. There weren't many areas with shaky camera angles which normally throw the viewer off. This movie also has some of the best vehicle explosions you will ever see in any movie. It was also great to see new machines in the mix (motorcycle terminators and even Transformer-esque ones, too). The final fight scene was enjoyable as well. It was good to see Ahnuld's face in a movie again, even though it was cgi (but it was damn good cgi).

Overall, this movie is not terrible, but it is not spectacular, either. It's one of those movies that'll you'll get the box set for and watch them all in a row (there will be 6 movies in total, mind you). I'd only suggest this for theater viewing if you are a die-hard Terminator fan and want to see the next installment in the saga.

Effects: 10/10
Plot: 7/10
Overall: 8.5/10
